A scuffle erupted during the general house meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Tuesday as councillors from the Congress-AAP alliance clashed with BJP councillors. The confrontation began after the Congress-AAP councillors introduced a motion demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks about Dr. BR Ambedkar during a recent debate in the Rajya Sabha.
The situation escalated when Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh raised slogans and displayed a poster accusing BJP-nominated councillor Anil Masih of wrongdoing. BJP councillor Kuljeet Singh Sandhu attempted to snatch the poster, leading to a physical altercation between the two. CCTV footage from the meeting captured councillors engaging in heated arguments and pushing each other, with some reportedly looking directly at the cameras during the clash.
The remarks by Amit Shah, which Opposition parties claim were disrespectful to Dr. BR Ambedkar, have led to widespread protests. Congress and other Opposition parties, including INDIA Bloc allies, have accused Shah of undermining Ambedkar’s legacy. In Chandigarh, the BJP countered by alleging that Congress had historically belittled Ambedkar during Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Nationwide, protests over the remarks have intensified. In Raipur, Congress workers organized a march to the residence of the Chief Minister, demanding accountability from Shah. Protesters attempted to gherao the residence but were detained by police before being released later in the evening. Similar demonstrations were held in other parts of the country, reflecting growing political tensions.
Following the scuffle in Chandigarh, the municipal meeting was temporarily suspended by Mayor Kuldeep Kumar. The session resumed after a break, but the atmosphere remained tense. The incident is part of a broader controversy surrounding Shah’s remarks, which have sparked debates, protests, and disruptions both in Parliament and across the country.
